Here’s Why Faking Emotions at Work May Be Harming Your Body
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a job that they absolutely love. This can make each and every day a struggle emotionally. It can make it challenging to get out of bed in the morning and enjoy daily things like commuting. Many employees who are dissatisfied with their work lives tend to try to fake their emotions at work; however, this can eventually take a toll on the mind and body.
How Does Faking Emotions Impact the Body?
Faking emotions exhausts and depletes the mind and body. Individuals can start to feel as if they are constantly compromising and being inauthentic to themselves. This leads to feelings of anger and discontentment. Furthermore, constant emotional agony can even manifest as physical ailments. It can leave individuals with upset stomachs, anxiety, and tension headaches.
What Can Be Done?
While it can be extremely challenging to be mindful and set intentions during periods of turmoil, this is often the best way to overcome daily obstacles. It has been found that “deep acting” helps to effectively change how one perceives their emotions and everyday life.
Deep acting has to do with aligning how one feels on the inside with how they interact with coworkers. By being mindful and setting intentions, one is able to make a conscious effort to enjoy their work and interacting with coworkers. It is important to look forward to small things that bring you joy throughout the day. Even if that’s going to get a cup of coffee, taking a walk between meetings, or setting time to make sure you’re eating a nourishing lunch or snack.
Things like trying to focus for an hour and then taking a five to ten-minute break can be extremely effective. Taking time to write out your top three goals for the day or starting with the smallest and easiest task (like responding to emails) can also get the ball rolling.
As always, it is important to remember to take care of the mind and body first. After all, nothing can get done at work if your health is not your first priority. Remembering to drink enough water, eating snacks like vegetables or nuts, and meeting your 10,000 steps a day goal can be little strides that help the body to feel like it is functioning optimally.
